The Madness of Sara Mansfield is the first in the feminist sci-fi series, The MthR Trilogy, by Sophie McKeand. This story explores the intricacies of women’s relationships with technology, the land and each other. Set in the year 2050 after The Wars reconfigured much of Europe’s political landscape, a new operating system, MthR is developed by some of the best scientific minds in the sovereign state of Mont Blanc. MthR quickly becomes ubiquitous as her ability to meld gaming, work and social media through hyper-connected augmented reality deeply impacts the lives of our protagonists, who are simultaneously battling to understand an emerging, visionary connection with the natural world.

In celebration of the Creative Commons

This book is copyleft in solidarity with the trees and the land, whose very nature is the Creative Commons.

When deciding how to birth this book into the world it took a while to remember that, at its best, our culture is gloriously kaleidoscopic and as such allows for an infinite number of expressions and manifestations to co-exist. Only when we fall into the homogenous do we suffocate.

I wanted the making of this book to be an act of trust, whose creation speaks to an anarchic ideal that everything under this blue sky belongs with a collective stewardship, in the creative commons. I’ve chosen a life of relative freedom, a sovereign, nomadic life slow-travelling Europe in a van, owning no land or property, but as much as I shape this life, this way of living is also having a deep effect on me. Disconnecting from the more toxic elements of our culture encourages questions around how I dream and create, and how that interweaves with the collective consciousness. Whenever I sit with the trees, they remind me that everything we have is a gift from the land and as such we can take whatever we need, but that no thing belongs to us.

I think of the apple trees who give with such generosity, no matter if a person wants to eat a few or take the entire crop to sell, the apple trees offer their fruit indiscriminately. This is the truth of nature and we accept this as our right, yet rarely expect this same behaviour or commitment from ourselves.

This is why I decided to publish The MthR Trilogy as copyleft. The copyleft symbol represents the opportunity for others to use, study, share and disseminate the work freely. If a person uses the characters or narratives to a larger extent for their own creation, this subsequent work will need to also sit under the copyleft banner. I ask to be credited where applicable and, that if larger elements of the work are used, either directly quoted or as inspiration, a relevant donation be made to the refugee charity of your choice. Refugee Community Kitchen, Calais, and Refugee Women’s Centre, Dunkirk, are doing great work, as are the many refugee charities on Lesvos, as well as No Name Kitchen on the Balkan Route.

I would still encourage you to purchase a copy of this book from my website (SophieMcKeand.com) as this enables me to continue making a living within our current cultural paradigm. Please also note that the copyright to work not written by me remains with the original creator, as does all design work. Perhaps in the future some beautiful paperbacks will manifest, but I’m taking this one slow step at a time.

In an ideal world every person would receive a universal income allowing them to not just survive, but to thrive, and yes, I accept that I can’t control the world, but I do have power over what I send out into the cosmos and the intention behind that. I appreciate that our current capitalist monolith stands strong and imposing against the individual in cases where a person might attempt something different, but like I said, this is an act of trust. We do not have to be singular people fighting it out, we are a glorious microcosm-macrocosm beautifully co-created through syncretism, symbiosis and symbolism.

Thank you.
Sophie McKeand
