Conversations with water

April 20, 2019

Conversations with water: wherever we visit it is difficult to settle until I have connected with the water. Usually I do this through swimming, and we drink the local tap water, but where possible I’ll drink from streams too. The water here tastes like snow. Gloriously ice-cold & glacial. These routines are part of a simple water ceremony but if anybody has any to share I’d love to hear them?

Living in a van makes us acutely aware of our water consumption – we carry 3x 25L tanks, one goes under the sink with a small electric pump that carries water to the tap when we need it. The two reserves go in the boot. We live an old-school life now I suppose. Water has to be heated on the stove as we don’t have a water heater (or any kind of heater). 75L lasts two adults (and two thirsty doggies) about 6 days. If we’re near a water source and being extravagant it will only last 5, if we’re away from civilisation we can eek it out to 7 and have only bought bottled water on two occasions where the tapwater was spewing orange after a storm on Crete. Our shower is either a lake, stream or beach shower. Although we do also have a solar heated shower – we fill a 25L black rubber bag from a stream then leave it on the dashboard to heat in the sun. It hangs from the rear of the van & has a simple hose attachment. Only once (in Portugal last winter) did I get a shock showering naked in the middle of nowhere when an old guy came cycling up the hill ??. ? @andyrgarside ??. #vanlifeeurope #water #dailyconnectionwithnature #rewildyourlife
